ACCUSED WITHOUT TRIAL
The Sayadi-Vinck family has actually NOT been accused of anything.
There has been NO trial against them. Nor has one been announced.
Their bank accounts are frozen, their mandatory fire insurance cancelled; their freedom of movement limited to Belgium only; their humanitarian lifework destroyed; victimized; financially and socially strangled; ....
All these draconian and creeping measures miss any legal base: one Belgian Minister decided to act as such only because the name "Sayadi" had been placed on a UN list of people SUSPECTED of having met someone nowadays linked to a group that had contact with a government that was hard to ignore if one was willing to provide for the poor.
No accusation exists. No trial has happened nor is one planned. No evidence of whatsoever has been provided..Only some floating statement that they have been placed on the list based on "secret evidence". What evidence that might be or who came up with it, is unknown. Unless the following reports sheds some light on how the "war against terror" is conducted....
"El Pais", a famous Spanish newspaper, once mentioned the names of Nabil Sayadi and Patricia Vinck. It was a story about a man who had been working with the Sayadi's while providing aid in Kosovo. "El Pais" sticks to the names of 'potential terrorists'. It doesn't mention much about where the information came from and neither how it was obtained. Likely the journalists didn't know that much about such 'trivial' matter.....
The man who is said to have mentioned the Sayadi's got abducted in Kosovo. For days on end even the Red Cross didn't know his whereabouts.
The arrest (on whose order?; On what base?) took place with great spectacle in the days following "9/11". NATO-peacekeepers came to get him. "Some folks" interrogated the poor fellow night and day. This man - put in his underwear for days in a cold cell when not being shouted at, was kept awake at all time and 'intimidated'; amongst others by troopers cleaning their arms very ostentatious and in his immediate presence, while telling no one knew where he was; - signed in exhaustion, pain (permanent ever since...) and fever, a pile of blank papers. In a later fabricated statement this co-worker is said to have knowledge that Patricia Vinck met with a prominent community leader while providing aid in Afghanistan.
That man - once the US launched its attack on Afghanistan - was defined as a member of "Al Qaida". Thus, this fundamentalist (most likely in a dress, with a long beard and a turbaned) had a chat with a WOMAN (?!?) on how to distribute basic supplies best to the population. By doing what he did: talking to a woman in order to distribute humanitarian aid, that evil man legitimized the acts that happen now in Constitutional State Belgium?
It's said the Sayadi-Vinck case is so exceptional that there isn't any legislation - Belgian, European or neither internationally - to protect the rights of a family.
We truly wander whether this case truly is so exceptional.
Seemly books as "1984" and "Kafka's Trial" haven't managed to lift society to the level improvement can be achieved...
